Diagonal is the heart, the core, the center. The avenue that cuts Eixample neighbourghood and divides the city into two parts; in the north, Sarria, Gracia, Horta-Guinardó, Sant Andreu and Sant Adrià; in the south, Les Corts, Sant Martí, Poble Sec, Sants… Ten miles long through a city of neighborhoods, stories and big and small moments.
Today, in late 2014, one of its most central parts is being remodeled (the segment located between Balmes Street and Passeig de Gràcia); new times require the Centennial Avenue to suit the purposes of the inhabitants and visitors of the city; especially with regard to the width of sidewalks and bike lanes, strongly criticized since its construction due to the inefficiency of its path.
His tour was designed through Eixample to reach the Plaza de las Glories Catalanes (which, today, is Glories) near Gran Via.
What awaits the visitor along more than five miles of the Avenue? Owls, malls, monuments, landmark buildings and much more; but only for anyone who dares to cross the avenue from end to end, or decide to choose certain sections of it to be stored in the retina.
Perhaps the best known Diagonal is the most central; Diagonal of huge Signs Roura owl in Verdaguer square watching the place from above, already without its neon advertising and recalling a city that was lost in the late sixties.
At the Casa de les Punxes something similar happens; witness of Modernist Barcelona at the beginning of the century, now recalls the Catalan architecture attempt to return to origins, like other exponents like Bellesguard tower or Hospital de Sant Pau.
Along Avenida Diagonal you will find malls, where we visit three of the main buildings of the Corte Inglés and other fashion chains, entertainment and dining areas as l’Illa Diagonal or Diagonal Mar.
Los Tres Molinos, the building of Grupo Planeta, the Rey Juan Carlos I Hotel and the Royal Palace of Pedralbes, first; Serra House, Casa de les Punxes or Agbar Tower, on the other side. All of them exponents of a story that remember other figures and periods.
Diagonal Avenue is a historical, commercial and business hub since its construction, and for the atmosphere that it breathes it appears that visitors and citizens will continue walking and enjoying it for a hundred and fifty years, at least.
