One of the major players in the street life of Barcelona is the Magic Fountain (Font Magica) of Montjuic, one of the best spectacles that we can find in the city joining light, sound and water in a spectacle difficult to forget.
Magic Fountain of Montjuic, a spectacle for the senses
The Magic Fountain of Montjuic was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1929 by Carles Buigas, a young, self-taught engineer who created water and electricity works that can be visited even today in the Royal Palace of Pedralbes; however, it is the Magic Fountain of Montjuic, that with its dance of light and color through the water, makes visitors fall in love.
Somehow, the fountain destroyed with its innovative lighting show the four columns of Josep Puig i Cadafalch, although it was the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera that really destroyed it: the Magic Fountain made the citizens of Barcelona forget one of the more powerful symbols of Catalonia (symbolizing the four stripes of the Catalan flag) which was rebuilt in 2010.
The current show can be enjoyed from the eighties. Fully restored for the Olympic Games in 1992 (who does not remember the recording of Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury in front of the Magic Fountain of Montjuic?) the fountain was consolidated as a basic attraction of the city after the 2002 MTV Europe Music Awards.
In winter, the shows are limited to Friday and Saturday from 19:00 to 21:00, and the choreography starts at 19:00, 19:30, 20:00 and 20:30; also we enjoye jazz concerts during the Voll-Damm Festival, that pays tribute to great figures like Sinatra, Edith Piaf or Billie Holliday. At Christmas, like every year, the shows include carols.
From March 27 (with the Spring time), we can enjoy the choreography on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 21:00 to 23:00.
To visit the Magic Fountain of Montjuic is a must if you go to Barcelona, where you will find a spectacular lighting and even magical pyrotechnics where music, light and sound merge into a single dance.
To enjoy the spectacle of light, water and sound of the Magic Fountain it is almost mandatory in every visit to the city. The Pere Tarres Hostel is the best hostel of Barcelona in which to stay. We will wait for you!
