Santa Caterina Market: Innovation and Gastronomy center

Mercat Santa Caterina

Located in the historic center of Barcelona, in La Ribera neighborhood, district of Ciutat Vella, Santa Caterina Market is one of its symbols of identity, a place you can not miss if you decide to visit the city. With its colorful cover, it has become one of the most popular places in recent years.

It was first built in 1845 and opened in 1848, being the second most important market in Barcelona, after La Boqueria, and the first covered in the city. The story tells that the market was built on the ruins of the convent of Santa Caterina, which was demolished in 1835 due to the political instability of the time. During the 40s, postwar era, Santa Caterina was the main center providing food for Barcelona and the surrounding towns, like Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Mataró, Sant Adrià del Besos, Masnou, etc.

Gradually the market became more important growing together with the city. However, in 1997, the City Council considered that Santa Caterina required a remodeling project and it was started by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. Thus, in addition to returning to the market vitality and good look that have been lost with the time, this reconstruction was a clear modernization and rehabilitation of the neighborhood itself. Undoubtedly the star element of the project was the mosaic cover of the market, which was intended to represent the colors of the fruits and vegetables of the old shops selling in the streets. Thus we see a clear influence of the modernist architect Gaudí, who was inspired above all, in the elements of nature to create his works, being the best example the unfinished Sagrada Familia.

The interior does not disappoint market visitors, its wooden structure and organization of spaces makes it a very warm and welcoming place. The color and vitality are key elements of this market, as all shops are spectacular, able to attract anyone who enters the building. The work was completed in 2005 and, after remodeling, Santa Caterina Market became a center of innovation and gastronomy, thanks to both its modern exterior and interior and the quality of its food.
