Barcelona is a city which has been growing long before the Barcelona 92 Olympic Games were celebrated. Its urban projects and great works have been forming a unique personality in constant ebullition over time. This was intensified with the games arrival, the city condal received a strong boost with the new Olympic Village, waterfront restoration or part of the beautiful Montjuïc. Barcelona’s Olympic was a fundamental moment in its history, giving the foundations of a promising future, which in the present is already reaping its fruits.

If we have to choose a specific date of the development and opening this beautiful city to the world, it would be 25th of July, 1992, the day when the Olympic Games began, a historic moment which has made a turning point for Barcelona on the map.

It assumed the departure of its international projection, including here its model of diverse city, cosmopolitan and civic. Some games that marked a before and after the history of the city, both sports level for all Spanish sport as well as architectural and city configuration. Since then Barcelona has opened to the world, with changes of great urban plan, social and cultural.

The Barcelona skyline has changed after the Olympics Games with new neighborhoods and buildings.

The celebration of the Olympic Games and the urban and social impulse that has started in Barcelona can be considered as the second great revolution after the Plan Cerdá, which extended the city and formed the bases of Barcelona which we know today.

Barcelona has been shaping model of a city that bets on the harmony between the neighborhoods, the increase of green areas and leisure, as well as an interest in staying ahead with large infrastructures such as the expansion of El Prat airport and the revitalisation of new neighborhoods like Poblenou, converted into a modern and dynamic area.

During the Olympic Games, to accommodate all the boats that participated in sailing competitions, the Olympic port was built. It functions as marina nowadays, leisure area and tourist center of Barcelona. The mountain of Montjuïc was also transformed, with the refurbishment of the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, and the construction of modern sports facilities such as the Palau Sant Jordi.

For Barcelona 92 was built the Anella Olimpica, a green space with the main sports venues.

With the arrival of the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics, two towers were built and later on have become authentic icons: the Collserola Communications Tower, which dominates the city from Tibidabo, designed by famous architect Norman Foster and the Communications Tower of Montjuïc known as Torre Telefónica or Torre Calatrava by Santiago Calatrava. Subsequently, skyline of Barcelona has changed with the construction of Torre Mapfre and the Hotel Arts in the Olympic Port, the highest buildings in the city nowadays.

In recent years the city has continued its unstoppable transformation with the 22 @ district project, redefining the industrial neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo, revitalisation the Besós area, and new construction of Diagonal Mar, with green spaces and parks, such as the Central Park of Nou Barris or the Parrque of the Poblenou Center.

It is therefore essential that the Torre Agbar (acronym from the Aguas de Barcelona company) a skyscraper 145 meters heigh and authentic symbol of Barcelona today. The last urban project is called supermanzanas, which restrict traffic to give priority to the pedestrian traffic, with bike lanes and many public facilities.

Barcelona as a European city, with plans for the future and innovation, is surprising and eclectic place capable of wandering the visitor with its architectural and urbanistic wealth, but also cultural, social or gastronomic offer.

These are some of the changes which the city has undergone during the last 25 years, and it can be a proof that the celebration of the Olympic Games of Barcelona 92 has caused the transformation the industrial city into touristic, cultural city, and moreover, made it modern.
